Spanish for “Women Island”, Isla Mujeres was a Mayan sanctuary to the goddess Ixchel for about a thousand years, uninhabited until around 1850. Today, this small island makes for the perfect destination for those wanting to escape the daily routine for a bit.
At only 4.3 miles in length, Isla Mujeres is easy to navigate. The main town area on the north end is very compact and walkable, and the main road makes a loop around the island, which can easily be explored on bike or golf cart.
During the day, the island is bustling with activity with visitors from Cancún enjoying to popular Playa Norte and other destinations. But at night, the magic and tranquility of this small island take over as the last ferry departs for the mainland.
